I find it very promising when I see advertisements that support my values. What I really appreciate about the above Cheerios commercial is the emphasis on family. I love how the father is sitting down and sharing breakfast with, and really engaging, his young daughter. So few fathers take the time to have this kind of one-on-one interaction with their kids. I was also struck by the implicit pro-life overtones in the ad. The baby in the mother’s tummy is a little brother or sister, not a fetus or, as our ultrasound technician recently referred to our baby, “your pregnancy.” These impersonal terms are disgustingly dehumanizing to our future gifts from God. I also loved how it was a mommy and daddy, though it is telling that I would even feel the need to mention that as something worth noting. All in all, I loved this commercial and I watched it several times, smiling from ear to ear each time. Sadly, not everyone agrees with me, and many have apparently been so taken aback by one insignificant detail that they missed the beauty of it all-together. There, but by the grace of God, go I.
